Old Testament Literature Reflection

Melissa L. Morgan

Although I had previously read the Old Testament, this course made me more familiar with the historical events and major characters of the Old Testament and how these events relate to salvation through Christ. Also, this course encouraged me to learn more specific geography as it relates to biblical events in history, as well as the overall content and dates of the major events in Israel's history. I especially gained new knowledge of the Old Testament “minor” prophets—they have always been a real challenge for me, to distinguish between them and relate them to teachings in the New Testament. For instance, I learned that Habakkuk said that “The just shall live by faith,” and Romans 1:17 quotes this verse.

The format of the course, as well as the video lectures, has also enabled me to relate the various books of the O.T. to the chronological sequence in Israel's history. Thanks so much, for uploading the video lectures for me; I really enjoyed them!

I also learned the central theme and theological message of each of the 39 O.T. books, through the information and memorable study guides provided in the course. I especially loved the detailed reviews; they helped me to retain the most important information. Without the study guides, I would have been overwhelmed. Even so, I realize that I have just scratched the surface; I expect to continue to study the Old Testament until I go to be with the Lord, and I hope to continue to grow in faith (which comes “through hearing.”)

Through this course, I have a new appreciation of the value of the O.T. and its relevance for today, and in my personal life. I would like to study the Old Testament books in more depth, and look forward to further Bible courses at GBS. We cannot fully understand the New Testament without a good understanding and knowledge of the Old Testament. For instance, I learned that the first reference to the trinity was in the Genesis creation account! I am also very interested in reading more about the spiritual significance of Mount Moriah, where Abraham offered to sacrifice Isaac, just as Christ was sacrificed for me.

Through GBS courses, and O.T. Literature specifically, I feel like I am growing in grace-and appreciation of Christ’s sacrifice for me. This course contained practical information to strengthen me to be able to avoid the sins and errors committed by Israel through unbelief and rebellion against God. I will continue to use the lessons from the Old Testament in my writing and teaching, and have posted some of the information on my website and Facebook pages (See Empowered Evangelical, http://www.facebook.com/EmpoweredEvangelical ). . I love this quote from Nahum: “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble: and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
