What Our Dad Taught Us

Dedicated To the Memory of L. Charles Brown, Our Daddy and Grandpa

The Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

We wish to try to share a small piece of what our Daddy and Grandpa taught us.

Our dad always encouraged us to excel. We can credit our Dad with instilling an adequate grasp of basic Algebra into his daughter. Teaching math to someone focused on language arts was a worthy challenge! Now his homeschooled grandchildren are reaping the benefits.

However, our Dad taught us values far more significant than academics. Our Dad has given us riches far above price. Dad never sought riches, except for riches of the heart. He desired very little in life, except to have his children and grandchildren with him. That made him happy more than any amount of earthly pleasures. He taught us that after the Lord, family is most important.

He taught us to bear life’s pain with a smile, a joke, or when all else fails, with an unfailing stubbornness. He taught us that right is right, wrong is wrong, but love people anyway. He taught us that you can’t tell what is in a person’s heart by the color of their skin, the type of clothing they wear, or any physical measurement. He taught us that honesty is more important than earthly success. Our dad was one of the smartest people we ever knew. Yet he always rooted for the underdog.

Unable to attend church in his last years due to his health, he demonstrated a quiet, unshakeable faith in his Creator. Through his love and incredible strength of will, he continued to teach us until the moment he was called home with his Lord, appropriately on All Saint’s Day.

His legacy continues to speak to us now, as we must carry on without him. With God’s help, we’ll do our best to emulate his strength and love, and if the Lord tarries, impart it to generations yet to come.

We believe that our dad is now in a higher calling of worship with the Lord. He would have desired nothing except that all his children and grandchildren join him with the Lord one day—that not one of them would be lost. Then one day, “When we all get Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be…when we all see Jesus, we’ll sing and shout the victory!”

“Let us then be true and faithful,

trusting, serving every day;

just one glimpse of Him in glory

will the toils of life repay.”*
